Vanessa Mae Biography
Vanessa-Mae began playing piano at the age of three, when she was five she began to play the violin. At the age of seven she won a Young British Pianist of the Year competition, which was the only one she took part in. But she gave up her pianist career and decided to concentrate exclusively on playing violin.
The early years
When she was eight years old Vanessa-Mae got an invitation from professor Lin-Yao-Ji to continue her training at the conservatory in Beijing being taught by the Maestro according to methods developed by russian teachers. The course was originally scheduled for 3 years, but Vanessa-Mae was able to finish it in few months, assimilating all hints and suggestions received from her teachers in such a short period of time.
After she returned to Europe Vanessa-Mae continued her training. In 1988 Vanessa-Mae travelled to Schlezwig-Holstein for summer master-courses, where she trained under professor Felix Andreyevsky. She started her concert appearances at the age of 10 and played with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, being the youngest solist in history to play Bach, Mozart and Kabalevsky with the orchestra. When Vanessa was 11, she passed entrance exams for a one-year course at Royal College of Music in London. She became the only child in the College's history to gain the The Professional Diploma Course diplomma one year later. During the Mozart Year in 1991 Vanessa-Mae performed her first international tour at the age of 12.
Vanessa-Mae became relatively famous in the UK Throughout her childhood by regular appearances on television show like Blue Peter mostly involving very conservative classical music and style.
The Violin Player
On entering adolescence Vanessa broke away from her parents' influenece and became known for her flashy, sexy style appearing in music videos in stylish outfits. Vanessa-Mae appeared on the Janet Jackson album The Velvet Rope playing a violin solo on the song Velvet Rope.
In 1995 Vanessa-Mae's album The Violin Player was released. It features a fusion of classics, pop, rock and techno as she is describing it itself. She also played on Sopot Festival in Poland and the performance turned out to be a huge success. Vanessa-Mae got a completely new publicity and The Violin Player was sold in almost 300,000 copies at this time.
Vanessa-Mae made people interested in violin music and gave the instrument a whole new image, since it was forgotten by many people and only associated with philharmonies before.
